For convicted murderers at Cold Mountain Penitentiary in 1930s Louisiana, the "green mile" is their last stop. The "mile" is presided over by a group of guards who show an uncommon respect for the prisoners' dignity with the notable exception of the cruel and self-righteous Percy (Doug Hutchison).
As each execution approaches, the guards rehearse their grim task with studied grace.
When a prisoner named John Coffey (Michael Clark Duncan) arrives, all are astounded by his size. He dwarfs the towering guard, Brutus "Brutal" Howell (David Morse) but, oddly, Coffey is afraid of the dark. As head guard Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) gets to know the gentle Coffey he begins to doubt that Coffey could be the murderer of two young girls.
Instead, Coffey amazes Edgecomb with his powerful gift of healing.
Percy becomes increasingly more troublesome and an insane, sadistic prisoner named Wild Bill (Sam Rockwell) arrives on the mile.
With the knowledge of Coffey's gift for healing, four of the guards embark on an incredible journey with John Coffey that will reveal secrets, visit justice on some, and affirm life, goodness, and love.
